The Apple Tree Hill house perches lightly atop its hilly site, looking out eagerly onto a broad view of Kent Cove. Footings grow into posts which branch out to pull the roof taut across an exterior arcade. Walking outside is a must; the covered arcade, dancing around the entire house, is the only connection between the main living wing and the bedroom wing, and it shapes a courtyard between them. Emerging from the generous covering of the sage green eave which controls the hot summer sun, one enters into a lofted interior framed by a double staircase with brilliant botanical handrail panels by the artist Josie Iselin. The roof framing is exposed, connecting to the New England tradition of barn timber construction. Triangular trusses spring up from their supporting beams—the final flourish on a house filled with movement and active shapes.
